Waioli Mission House

As you gaze up at the rushing waterfalls that cascade down the mountainside along Hanalei, take a moment to notice the majestic landscape that is home to the 1836 Waioli Mission House. This tranquil oasis feels like a three-dimensional plein air painting. It was the original home of missionary teachers Abner and Lucy Wilcox and their seven sons. This historic property is bordered by ancient taro fields and lush green hillsides.

The 48-acre site preserve bountiful ancient taro lo’i and much-valued auwae water systems in the Waioli valley, it welcomes residents and visitors with a gathering place. The adjacent Waioli Park is open to the local community and often used for athletic, cultural and craft events throughout the year.

Grove Farm

Step onto the 100-acre Grove Farm homestead and explore what it was like to be a sugar planter back in the 1860s.

Situated on Nawiliwili Road in Lihue a few hundred yards above the harbor, this is the state’s best remaining sugar plantation site. Visitors will find the earliest surviving set of domestic, agricultural, and sugar plantation buildings complimented by the 1850 and 1875 homes with authentic period furnishings and Hawaiiana collections, surrounded by magnificent orchards and vast pasture lands.

Acquired in 1864 by George N. Wilcox, second son of Abner and Lucy Wilcox, this splendid homestead was the center of operations for the developing Grove Farm Plantation.

At Grove Farm, Hawaiian tradition carries on. Visit the homestead and find yourself back in time experiencing an authentic sugar plantation owners home and farm and a part of old Hawaii. Reservations are required.

About the Waioli Corporation

Waioli Corporation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity established in 1975 by Mabel Wilcox. Its mission is to oversee the preservation of the following pristine historical sites on the Garden Isle of Kauai:

• 1914 Mahamoku beach house in Hanalei
• 1852 Lepeuli ahupua’a
• Rare and extensive collections of Hawaiiana that include 4 Grove Farm Plantation steam locomotives, a 1943 Puhi locomotive roundhouse, and a mile long section of the Lihue Plantation locomotive right-of-way.
